You Always Have to Rely on Something examines the influence football has on communities. As the most loved, hated and widely discussed sport worldwide, football mirrors society with its rules, roles and goals. With its themes of sacrifice, conflict, respect, teamwork and loyalty, football offers a metaphor for society, which is perhaps why it draws such an intense investment and emotional following from individuals across different cultures.
Inspired by blokecore and the casuals movement that appeared in the 1970’s, this project is a careful layering of diverse stories and unique experiences, each revealing the complex relationship between the individuals and ‘the world game’. The series uncovers football’s intense power to shape identity and foster belonging, uniting people in a shared, collective identity through mere participation. The project shows how football transcends sport; it evolves into a feeling through connection, collective identity, cultural significance, family and trends.
